Description

These Beef Pasties are a classic British savory hand pie packed with ground beef, potatoes, rutabaga, and aromatic seasonings, all enveloped in flaky, buttery pastry. Perfect for an ultimate hearty meal, they deliver a comforting blend of flavors and textures baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large potato, peeled and finely diced
  • 1 small rutabaga or turnip, peeled and finely diced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Pastry and Finishing

  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts or homemade shortcrust pastry (enough for 4 rounds)
  • 2 tbsp butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
  2. Prepare Filling: In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, finely diced potato, rutabaga, chopped onion, salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and Worcestershire sauce until combined evenly.
  3. Roll and Cut Pastry: Roll out the refrigerated or homemade pastry dough and cut into 4 circles, about 6-8 inches in diameter, to form the pasty shells.
  4. Fill and Add Butter: Place a portion of the beef filling on one half of each pastry circle, leaving a border around the edges to allow sealing. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter to add richness.
  5. Seal Pasties: Fold the pastry over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Crimp the edges firmly with a fork to ensure they are well sealed, then cut a small slit on top of each pasty to allow steam to escape during baking.
  6. Brush with Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the sealed pasties generously with beaten egg to achieve a beautiful golden-brown color after baking.
  7. Bake: Place the pasties on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden brown.
  8. Cool and Serve: Let the pasties cool slightly on a wire rack before serving to allow the filling to set and avoid burns.

Notes

  • For convenience, substitute fresh vegetables with frozen mixed vegetables if desired.
  • You can prepare and freeze the unbaked pasties; when baking from frozen, add 10 extra minutes to the baking time.
