Ingredients
Scale
Toffee Base
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt (optional, for extra flavor contrast)
Base Layer
- 1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs (about 15 graham crackers, crushed)
Topping
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts), optional
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and facilitate easy removal of the toffee.
- Make the Toffee Mixture: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter and packed brown sugar. Stir constantly until the mixture starts to boil. Allow it to boil for 3-4 minutes while continuing to stir, until it thickens to a smooth, caramel-like consistency. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt, if using.
- Prepare Base Layer: While the toffee is simmering, evenly spread the graham cracker crumbs over the lined baking sheet to create a crunchy foundation for the toffee.
- Pour Toffee Over Base: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture over the graham cracker crumbs. Spread it gently and evenly with a spatula to cover the entire surface.
- Bake the Toffee: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the toffee mixture is bubbly and thoroughly heated through.
- Add Chocolate Layer: Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chips sit for 2-3 minutes to melt.
- Spread Melted Chocolate: Using a spatula, spread the melted chocolate into a smooth, uniform layer over the toffee base.
- Add Nuts (Optional): Sprinkle the chopped pecans or walnuts over the melted chocolate layer to add crunch and extra flavor, if desired.
- Cool and Set: Allow the toffee to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, transfer it to the refrigerator and chill for at least 1 hour to firm up completely before cutting into squares or breaking into pieces for serving.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh unsalted butter and tightly packed brown sugar.
- Graham cracker crumbs should be finely crushed to ensure an even base layer.
- Use good quality semi-sweet chocolate chips for a smooth, rich topping.
- Nuts are optional but add great texture and flavor contrast.
- Store toffee in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep it fresh and crisp.
- Allow toffee to come to room temperature slightly before serving for best flavor and texture.
