Ingredients
Scale
Biscuits
- 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough
Sausage Gravy
- 1 lb breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 tsp black pepper (or to taste)
Egg Mixture
- 6 large eggs
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Garnish
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Biscuit Layer: Cut the biscuit dough into quarters and evenly spread half of the pieces in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage for 6 to 8 minutes until it is browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
- Make Sausage Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir to combine. Gradually add the whole milk, stirring continuously until the gravy thickens. Season with black pepper to taste.
- Layer Gravy: Pour half of the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit dough in the baking dish.
- Add Egg Mixture: In a bowl, whisk together the eggs until smooth. Pour the eggs evenly over the gravy layer in the dish.
- Top with Remaining Biscuit Dough and Gravy: Arrange the remaining biscuit pieces over the egg layer, then pour the remaining sausage gravy over the top. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top if using.
- Bake the Casserole: Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes until the biscuits are golden brown and the casserole is set.
- Rest and Garnish: Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes to allow it to set. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired, then serve warm.
Notes
- You can substitute whole milk for 2% or low-fat milk for a lighter version.
- Add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the sausage gravy for a spicy kick.
- Cheddar cheese is optional but adds a nice richness; feel free to use other cheeses like pepper jack or mozzarella.
- This casserole can be prepared the night before and baked in the morning for convenience.
- Make sure to drain the sausage fat well to avoid greasy gravy.
