Description

A delicious Caramelized Onion and Gruyère Tart featuring sweet, slow-cooked onions layered on flaky puff pastry and topped with melted Gruyère cheese and fresh thyme. Perfect as a savory appetizer or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves

Topping

  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it is hot and ready for baking the tart.
  2. Caramelize Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil and butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become golden brown and caramelized. Season the onions with salt, pepper, and fresh thyme leaves, then remove from heat.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: On a floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to fit your tart pan. Transfer the rolled pastry into the pan, pressing gently to fit, and prick the bottom with a fork to prevent excessive puffing during baking.
  4. Assemble Tart: Evenly spread the caramelized onions over the pastry base, then sprinkle the grated Gruyère cheese over the onions for a rich, savory layer.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the beaten egg. This will give the crust a golden, glossy finish when baked.
  6. Bake Tart: Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until the puff pastry is puffed and golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the tart from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Make sure to cook the onions slowly over medium heat to fully caramelize and bring out their natural sweetness without burning.
  • Thaw puff pastry completely before rolling to prevent cracking and ensure even puffing.
  • You can substitute Gruyère cheese with Emmental or Comté for a similar flavor profile.
  • Fresh thyme adds a lovely herbal note, but dried thyme can be used in a pinch.
  • Serve with a simple green salad for a complete meal.
