Description
A classic patty melt featuring juicy ground beef patties, caramelized onions, melted Swiss cheese, and rye bread toasted to golden perfection. This hearty sandwich is a perfect comfort food, combining savory flavors with a satisfying crisp texture.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Patty Melt
- 4 tablespoons butter, divided
- 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
- 1 pound ground beef
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 8 slices rye bread (or your favorite sandwich bread)
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft, golden brown, and caramelized, about 20-25 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Prepare the Beef Patties: Form the ground beef into 4 equal-sized patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper. In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat until browned and cooked through, approximately 4-5 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on four slices. Add the cooked beef patties on top of the cheese, then divide the caramelized onions evenly over the patties. Top with the remaining slices of bread, mayonnaise side down.
- Cook the Patty Melts: Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet over medium heat. Add the assembled sandwiches and cook until the bread is toasted and golden brown, and the cheese has melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press down gently with a spatula to ensure even browning and melting.
- Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, let them rest for a minute, then slice and serve warm.
Notes
- Use rye bread for the authentic patty melt flavor, but any sturdy sandwich bread will work.
- Caramelizing onions slowly enhances the sweetness and depth of flavor.
- Mayonnaise adds moisture and helps achieve a golden, crispy crust on the bread.
- You can add mustard inside the sandwich if you like an extra tangy taste.
- For a healthier option, use lean ground beef and whole grain bread.
