Description

This Crockpot Stuffing with Sausage and Apple is a savory and slightly sweet dish perfect for holiday gatherings or comforting family meals. Juicy ground sausage pairs beautifully with the crisp, tart apples and a mix of sautéed onions and celery, all combined with toasted bread cubes and rich poultry seasoning. Slow-cooked in a crockpot, it results in a moist, flavorful stuffing that’s easy to prepare and serves as a delightful side dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Mixture

  • 1 lb ground sausage
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 apples, peeled and chopped

Stuffing Base

  • 8 cups cubed bread, toasted
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sausage Mixture: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until it’s browned and cooked through, breaking it apart as it cooks. Add the chopped onion and celery, and cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes. Then, stir in the peeled and chopped apples and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes with the cooked sausage mixture. Add the melted unsalted butter, chicken broth, poultry seasoning, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir gently until all ingredients are evenly mixed and the bread cubes are moistened but not soggy.
  3. Transfer to Crockpot: Lightly grease the inside of the crockpot to prevent sticking. Pour the stuffing mixture into the crockpot and spread it evenly.
  4. Cook the Stuffing: Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours, or until the stuffing is cooked through and heated evenly. Avoid lifting the lid too often to maintain heat.
  5. Serve: Once done, fluff the stuffing with a fork before serving. Enjoy it as a hearty side for turkey, chicken, or your favorite protein.

Notes

  • Use day-old or slightly stale bread for better texture and absorption.
  • For a gluten-free option, substitute with gluten-free bread.
  • You can add chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts for extra crunch if desired.
  • Adjust seasoning to your preference; adding fresh herbs like thyme or sage can enhance flavor.
  • If you prefer a crispier top, transfer the cooked stuffing to a baking dish and bake in a 350°F oven for 15 minutes before serving.
