Description

These Monte Cristo Puff Pastry Bites combine savory turkey, ham, and Swiss cheese with a hint of honey mustard, all encased in flaky, golden puff pastry. Perfect as an appetizer or party snack, they are easy to make and bake quickly to a deliciously crispy finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 2 cups cooked chopped turkey
  • 2 cups chopped ham
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • ¼ cup honey mustard dressing
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Pastry

  • 1 (17.3-oz) package puff pastry, thawed (2 sheets)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tbsp water
  • Nonstick cooking spray (for muffin pans)
  • Dried parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 425ºF (220ºC). Lightly spray two muffin pans with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking and set them aside.
  2. Make Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the cooked chopped turkey, chopped ham, shredded Swiss cheese, and honey mustard dressing. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to your taste, then mix well to evenly combine.
  3. Cut Puff Pastry: Roll out one sheet of thawed puff pastry dough into a 9×12-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into 12 equal squares. Repeat this process with the second sheet of puff pastry.
  4. Assemble Bites: Gently press each puff pastry square into a muffin cup, forming a cup shape. Spoon the prepared turkey and ham filling evenly into each puff pastry cup.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush the edges of each puff pastry cup with the egg wash to help them brown nicely during baking.
  6. Bake: Place the muffin pans in the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up, and the filling is heated through.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove the puff pastry bites from the oven and sprinkle with dried parsley for a touch of color and flavor. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure puff pastry sheets are thawed completely before rolling and cutting to avoid tearing.
  • You can substitute honey mustard with Dijon mustard or mayonnaise for a different flavor profile.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the turkey and ham and increase the cheese or add sautéed mushrooms and spinach to the filling.
  • Serve warm for best taste and texture.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven to maintain crispness.
