Ingredients
Scale
Sauce Ingredients
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 3 tbsp oyster sauce
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
Other Ingredients
- Noodles (quantity as per package instructions for 2 servings)
- Oil for stir-frying (e.g., vegetable or sesame oil, about 1-2 tbsp)
- Garlic (2-3 cloves, minced)
- Choice of vegetables or meat (e.g., sliced bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, chicken, beef, or shrimp, about 1-1.5 cups)
Instructions
- Prepare the Sauce: In a medium bowl, thoroughly mix together soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar, water, black pepper, and cornstarch until the mixture is smooth and well combined with no lumps.
- Cook the Noodles: Boil the noodles following the instructions on the package until they are al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Stir-Fry Aromatics and Vegetables/Meat: Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add minced garlic and stir-fry briefly until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add your choice of vegetables or meat and cook until tender and cooked through.
- Combine Noodles and Sauce: Add the cooked noodles to the skillet with the vegetables or meat. Stir-fry everything together for 1-2 minutes to combine well.
- Add Sauce and Toss: Pour the prepared Lo Mein sauce over the hot noodles and stir continually to ensure the noodles and ingredients are evenly coated with the sauce. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and clings to the noodles.
- Serve: Remove from heat and serve the Lo Mein hot, garnished with green onions or sesame seeds if desired.
Notes
- You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less brown sugar according to your taste preference.
- Substitute oyster sauce with mushroom sauce to make it vegetarian friendly.
- If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of water to loosen it.
- Use fresh garlic for the best flavor in stir-frying.
- Pair this sauce with any variety of noodles such as egg noodles, rice noodles, or wheat noodles.
- The black pepper can be replaced with white pepper for a more authentic Chinese flavor.
