Description

Classic Parker House Rolls are soft, buttery dinner rolls with a slight sweetness, perfect for holidays or any special meal. These homemade rolls are tender, slightly folded for a charming shape, and brushed with melted butter for a glossy, flavorful finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened, plus more for brushing)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active and ready to use.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt to evenly distribute the dry ingredients before adding the wet ones.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Add the foamy yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms, ensuring all ingredients are well incorporated.
  4. Knead the dough: Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic, developing the gluten necessary for a light texture.
  5. First rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size, allowing the dough to ferment and expand.
  6. Shape rolls: Punch down the risen dough to release air. Roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness, then use a round cutter approximately 2 1/2 inches wide to cut out circles. Lightly fold each circle in half to create the signature Parker House shape.
  7. Second rise: Arrange the folded dough pieces slightly overlapping on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30–45 minutes, which helps the rolls become fluffy during baking.
  8. Preheat and bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15–18 minutes until golden brown, ensuring they are cooked through and beautifully crusted.
  9. Butter the rolls: Immediately after removing from the oven, brush the hot rolls with melted butter to add moisture and a rich flavor, then serve warm for the best experience.

Notes

  • To make ahead, shape the rolls and refrigerate overnight before the second rise. Allow rolls to come to room temperature and rise before baking.
  • These rolls freeze well after baking. Reheat in a low oven to restore softness.
  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute part of the milk with cream or add a touch of honey instead of sugar.
  • Use a sharp round cutter for clean edges on the rolls, enhancing their traditional look.
