Saltine Toffee, also known as Christmas Crack, is a delightfully easy and addictive holiday candy that combines crispy saltine crackers, buttery caramel toffee, and melted chocolate topped with your choice of nuts, sprinkles, or sea salt. It’s a quick-to-make dessert perfect for festive occasions or anytime you crave a sweet and salty treat.
Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
Toffee
- 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Topping
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Optional toppings: chopped nuts, sprinkles, or sea salt
Instructions
- Prepare the baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a 9×13-inch baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Lightly grease the liner to prevent sticking and arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer to completely cover the bottom of the pan.
- Make the toffee: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter together with the brown sugar. Stir constantly as the mixture comes to a boil, then allow it to cook and bubble for 3 minutes to form a rich caramel toffee.
- Pour toffee over crackers: Carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the saltine crackers in the baking sheet. Use a spatula to spread the toffee evenly, making sure each cracker is coated.
- Bake to set the toffee: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes or until the toffee layer is bubbling and bubbly, indicating it has properly set.
- Add chocolate topping: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips over the hot toffee layer. Let it sit for about 2 minutes to allow the chocolate chips to melt gently.
- Spread the melted chocolate: Using a spatula or spoon, evenly spread the melted chocolate over the toffee layer for a smooth finish.
- Add optional toppings: While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle your choice of chopped nuts, colorful sprinkles, or a pinch of sea salt to enhance flavor and texture.
- Chill and serve: Transfer the baking sheet to the refrigerator and chill for about 1 hour or until the toffee and chocolate are fully set. Once firm, break the toffee into pieces and serve.
Notes
- Use light brown sugar for a softer, more caramel-like flavor or dark brown sugar for a deeper, richer taste.
- Store the toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week or refrigerate to keep it fresh for a longer time.
