Description

A quick and flavorful stir-fried shrimp and broccoli recipe combining tender shrimp, crisp broccoli, and a savory-sweet sauce for a healthy and satisfying meal perfect for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 4 cups broccoli florets

Sauce Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium preferred)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (or white vinegar)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)

Other Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or sesame oil for extra flavor)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated (optional)
  • 1 small onion, sliced (optional)
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional for extra flavor)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey or brown sugar, rice vinegar, and the cornstarch-water mixture. Stir well until the cornstarch is fully dissolved, then set aside to let the flavors meld.
  2. Cook the Broccoli: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add broccoli florets and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp. For softer broccoli, add a splash of water and cover to steam for an additional 1-2 minutes. Remove broccoli from skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the Shrimp: Using the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until pink and opaque. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Stir-Fry the Aromatics: In the same skillet, add minced garlic and grated ginger if using. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant. If desired, add sliced onion and red bell pepper now for extra crunch and color.
  5. Combine Everything: Return the cooked shrimp and broccoli to the skillet with the aromatics. Pour the prepared sauce over the mixture and stir well to coat. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and the dish is heated through.
  6. Serve: Serve the hot stir-fry immediately over rice or noodles for a delicious and nutritious meal.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, replace vegetable oil with sesame oil.
  • Adjust sweetness by using honey or brown sugar according to preference.
  • Add splash of water while cooking broccoli to soften it if needed.
  • Optional vegetables like onion and red bell pepper add color and texture.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce to make it heart-healthier.
